Please carefully read the patch instructions in order to correctly update your Expressionist 3.00 application and desk accessory to version 3.01. Do not attempt to patch your original Expressionist disks.
About the 3.01 Update and Patches
-------------------------------
The Expressionist 3.01 patch disk includes:
o a new Prescience folder (with new preferences files and copy as text files)
o a program to patch the Expressionist 3.00 application to update it to version 3.01
o a program to patch the Expressionist 3.00 desk accessory to update it to version 3.01
These instructions assume you have Expressionist 3.0 and you installed it according to its manual.
It may be necessary to disable your System INITs and extensions prior to running the patchers. Restart after disabling them, then enable them after suing the patchers and restart again.
Installing the New Prescience Folder
---------------------------------
Go to the Finder (aka desktop) and open the System Folder on your startup disk. If necessary, use the scroll boxes so that the Preferences folder is visible. Insert the Expressionist 3.01 Patch floppy disk and drag the Prescience folder from the Expr Patch disk to your Preferences folder. (Respond in the affirmative when asked by the Finder whether to replace the existing folder.)
Patching the Application
----------------------
Insert the Expressionist 3.01 Patch floppy disk and double-click the icon Expr Appl 3.00->3.01 patch. After the initial information screen, click the |Patch| button. Use the familiar file selection dialog to choose the Expressionist 3.00 application on your hard disk, then click the |Open| button. When the patch is complete, click the |OK| button and the patcher quits. You will see that the Expressionist application has been renamed Expressionist 3.01 (If not, restart you Mac.) Rename it Expressionist. You may then use Expressionist.
Patching the Desk Accessory
--------------------------
Remove the Expressionist DA from your System. (Just drag it to the Trash under System 7 or use the Font/DA Mover to remove it under System 6.) Insert Disk 2 from your Expressionist 3.0 package and drag the Expressionist DA suitcase file from the Expr #2 of 2 disk to your hard disk. Drag the icon Expr #2 of 2 to the Trash to ejuct the disk, then insert the Expressionist 3.01 Patch floppy disk.
Double-click the icon Expr DA 3.00->3.01 patch. After the initial information screen, click the |Patch| button. Use the familiar file selection dialog to choose the Expressionist DA suitcase file on your hard disk, then click the |Open| button. When the patch is complete, click the |OK| button and the patcher quits. You will see that the Expressionist DA suitcase has been renamed Expressionist DA 3.01. (If not, restart your Mac.)
Install the desk accessory from this suitcase file like the installation instructions in the manual. You may then use Expressionist.

Good Printer Settings
--------------------
After you have followed the manual's installation instructions, don't neglect to choose the output settings. This is explained at the end of the installation section, except that version 3.01 is slightly different from what is described in the manual. When you choose the Picture Format menu item you gaet a different dialog. However, it still has a Choose Good Settings button.
Picture Format Dialog
--------------------
Version 3.01's Picture Format dialog is different from what is described in the manual. However, it still has a Choose Good Settings button. Click the customize button to get the Picture Format dialog described in the manual.
Ugly Eqations
------------
Equations made with certain picture format options might look bad on screen when pasted into a word processor. (E.g., equations made with embedded PostScript may have inaccurate spacing and hi-res bitmap euqations may look bold.) However, they will look fine when printed. If the on-screen look is more important to you than the printed look, use the Normal pcture format without embedded PostScript. Version 3.01 improved the on-screen appearance of equations somewhat.
EGO Editing
----------
When an expression was transferred to Expressionist 3.00 via EGO, it appeared in a new window with the Guide and Magnify modes off. Version 3.01 opens EGO windows with Guide and Magnify modes on for easier editing.
Microsoft Word
--------------
EGO prevents access to the Word 5.0 graphic editor. Pictures can not be edited in Word if the EGO for Word file is present in the Word commands folder.
Aldus PageMaker
---------------
The Aldus driver in PageMaker version 4.2a has been improved and works better with Expressionist.
Fonts
-----
For optimal results, use Expressionist with an outline font system, either TrueType or Adobe Type Manager (ATM). Do not use bitmapped screen fonts.
For best results, remove the screen font sizes you are using. (E.g., if you are using the default Times font with Symbol, remove Times 9 and 12, Times italic 9 and 12, and Symbol 9 and 12.) Let the outline font system do its job and render these fonts on screen by making calculations from the accurate outline font. Crummy bitmapped screen fonts, if installed, override the outline fonts and may result in poor equation spacing.
